Workshop 4: Stop Motion Animation

Title TBA

Through a hands-on, frame‑by‑frame stop‑motion process, students will immerse themselves in animation by using their own bodies as animated armatures. Working collaboratively, they will explore pixilation, a stop‑motion technique in which actors are animated one frame at a time to create illusionistic, character‑driven sequences.

To enrich their animations, students will incorporate a range of props and replacement elements, including interchangeable paper cut‑outs, 3D‑printed components, and malleable plasticine. These tools enable expressive transformations and dynamic visual storytelling. Throughout the workshop, students will engage with core animation principles such as timing, anticipation, exaggeration, squash and stretch, staging, and ease‑in/ease‑out, all while fostering creativity, experimentation, and teamwork.

Subjects: Film/TV, Media Arts, Drama, Visual Art, Design

Workshop 5: Shadow Puppetry

Subtitle TBA

Students will work in small groups to produce an original shadow puppet show, combining visual art, storytelling and live performance. Drawing on the expertise of QUT partner Dead Puppets Society this workshop connects creative practice across art forms, demonstrating how simple shapes, shadows and silhouettes can convey character, action and narrative.
