Our students are mainly of European descent with approximately 9% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Our students have a wide diversity of ability levels and come from diverse socio economic backgrounds. We have a transient student population and approximately 70% of students travel to school by bus. Our students' primary school experiences range from one teacher schools to large primary schools. Lowood State High School is committed to providing a high quality education which gives each student the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability. Our School Motto is 'CREATING THE FUTURE'.
We believe:  every child matters every day and that all students can be high achievers.
Our focus is on preparing students with the skills and qualifications that allow them to progress successfully to the next phase of their life; university, an apprenticeship or traineeship, further training or employment.  Our curriculum caters for the full range of students and is focused on providing a range of academic pathways and quality vocational pathways. Our educational support centre caters for students with disabilities with students having an individual education plan which addresses their specific needs in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Our junior secondary school curriculum is based on the eight Key Learning Areas with students having opportunities to achieve the required outcomes in each KLA via the Australian Curriculum and Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Framework.  Once students enter the senior school in year 10 they have more the flexibility to choose subjects of interest to ensure engagement success and assists in preparation for their last two years secondary schooling.  Every student in year 11 and 12 is assigned an Academic Coach.  The coach is a person who supports and guides their student to be the best they can be by providing timely feedback on their progress, determining strategies on how to improve individual outcomes and negotiating conversations with teachers in the school to ensure their student has the best possible opportunity to achieve success.  Failure is not an option at Lowood SHS.  We pride ourselves in ensuring every student leaves our school gates with qualifications that will set them up for their future.
Reading is the cornerstone of all success at learning.  As such we are embedding strategies to improve reading across the school include daily literacy warm-ups where students learn to improve their vocabulary, writing, reading, grammar and punctuation.  This strategy improves students of all abilities as well as extending our stronger students.
Our Responsible Behaviour Plan is based on the principles of restorative practices, with 'Relationships' at the core of the program. The behaviours of our Responsible Behaviour Plan are:  be READY, be RESPECTFUL and be RESPONSIBLE. Our Supportive School environment is characterised by high expectations for attendance, work ethic, behaviour, wearing the uniform proudly and correctly and most importantly maximising student learning outcomes.  We value, acknowledge and respect the achievements of our school community.
