A large number of our students cite listening to
music as a positive strategy that supports their
wellbeing, and they are not wrong!
Studies have shown that music activates the
parasympathetic nervous system, which helps
calm the body and lower levels of cortisol, the
stress hormone. Research also shows that music
helps ease anxiety.
One of the reasons music works so well is
because it can distract us from negative
thoughts. It can also spark positive feelings like
joy, comfort, or nostalgia, which help push away
stress and anxious emotions.
There’s no single “perfect playlist” for everyone,

but experimenting with music that matches
your current mood—and then gradually shifting
to a more positive vibe—can be very effective.
Because of the simplicity, and benefits of music,
our community-wide well-being project is to
create Lowood’s Top 100 playlist.
Students, staff and caregivers are welcome to
send through their favourite tracks to

no restrictions to the genre, release date or
length of submissions - as long as they are
school appropriate.
In our last newsletter of the year we will share
Lowood’s Top 100 songs!
